This project was realized during the CSC490 Capstone Project course, taught by Karan Singh at the University of Toronto.

Introduction

_ Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration, or of cultural and spiritual significance as in a cathedral. Small pieces, normally roughly cubic of different colors, known as tesserae, (diminutive tessellae), are used to create a pattern or picture.

Trying to create a mosaic image by hand or by using a usual drawing application is usually a very painstakingly long process .
We develop our application in order to make this task easier and more streamlined for users. We are able to achieve this through implementing various features such as growing-stroke algorithm, Laplacian smoothness and creative cloning techniques.

Main Idea:

_ Developing an application that allows users to create repetitive shapes or structures within defined boundaries through automatic and intelligent arrangement..

Some inspirational Examples:

  • Fish scale: when you draw a fish, you don't want to draw every single scale of it. You would like to be able to brush on your fish and its scales will appears. The goal of our application is to give you this opportunity, you could give a certain amount of rigidness to your scales. So when you will clone them, they will be able to be deformed in order to fit in the boundaries of your fish !
  • Balloons: Drawing small balloons in a bigger one.. Imagine balloons are full of helium : as you paste them they are going to go up until they come across a boundary or an other balloon. Balloons are also very    flexible, their shapes will be modified when new balloons are added in order to fit as better as possible in the boundaries.
  • Ice cubes in a glass: An iced cube is really rigid and follows physical laws (such as gravity). The application will allow you to clone iced cubes on the top of the boundaries of your glass. They will fall and find their position in the glass. You want to shake or moves the glass? Iced cubes will respond as real ones...
